Ewan-Gibson-Logo3-photo-kelly-muir-2017Ewan was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he lived until the age of eighteen. From an early age he was exposed to an eclectic range of music. Rock ‘n’ roll and blues, as well as the staple 80’s and 90’s chart toppers played a big part in influencing his musical direction in the years that followed. Although he began learning to read music and play the recorder at five years old, it wasn’t until the age of ten that he began formal training on the guitar. Clarinet was introduced in high school and by sixteen he had begun to focus entirely on jazz clarinet and rock guitar.

His music career took one step closer when he left home in 2002 to study music business and performance at North Glasgow College. After a two year break he returned to study electric guitar at the newly opened Academy of Music and Sound Edinburgh. During this time he was taught by top emerging players including Ant Law (guitar) and Kevin Glasgow (bass), as well as master classes from industry guitar heavyweights such as Guthrie Govan and country legend Albert Lee. He graduated from there with distinction in 2007 and made the decision to quit his job and pursue music exclusively. Since then Ewan has held several teaching posts around Edinburgh and Glasgow and has taught at the Academy of Music and Sound for ten years.

As well as teaching he has been working as a live and studio session musician for wide selection of artists: The Black Diamond Express; The Blueswater; Aaron Wright; Jacqui Abbot (The Beautiful South); Damo Suzuki (Can); William Douglas; Lewis Gibson and The MidasTouch; The Tinderbox Orchestra; Moving Melvin Brown; Aki Remally; Rossco Galloway; Daniel McGeever; Little Buddha… etc.

In addition to his experience as a performer and educator Ewan is the manager forThe Black Diamond Express. Since taking on this position in 2011 the band have moved from strength to strength: opening for The Mavericks in 2013; touring Canada in 2014; twice showcasing as part of Made in Scotland during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; and are imminently releasing a set of four EP’s that have been recorded over the last 24 months.

Most recently Ewan graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with a first class Bachelors degree (Honours) in Popular Music (electric bass performance and composition). Following this he is heading off on a series of UK and European tours.
